nouveau necklace
Chihiro has always enjoyed knitting and crocheting as a hobby. So it was a natural step for her to start stitching beads and thread onto the non-traditional surfaces of metal. She has been fascinated by the details and intricacy of lace design for the last few years, and she has finally found a way to lay the hand-crocheted lace onto a sterling silver background and create an elaborate piece of jewelry.
Inspired by the Art Nuveau style, this necklace has a structure that is highly stylized floral motif. The interplay between textures, some smooth and clean cut, others hand hammered, against the hand-crocheted lace sections play visually like the gold against the oxidized silver.
This necklace is fabricated from sterling silver sheet and wire, then either oxidized or 24k plated. Sections are hinged together to have the flexibility needed to wear, with a snap closure on back for a continuity of look. The lace is hand-crocheted with two colors of cotton embroidery thread, and then sewn onto silver background with nylon thread. 2mm onyx cabochons were set for accents in the flowers.
